Pesticide resistance and alternative management of organisms causing potato pink rot and late blight

Project Code: MUR06-150

Project Lead

Rick Peters - Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

To assess pesticide resistance for late blight and pink rot in potatoes in Canada over two years and to determine whether current chemical applications are warranted

Summary of results

Resistance to metalaxyl by strains of Phytophthora infestans, the causal agent of late blight, became commonplace in Canada in the late 1990s. However, the current status of pathogen populations is unclear. National surveys to determine the sensitivity to metalaxyl-m of P. erythroseptica, the causal agent of pink rot, have never been done. Therefore various applications of metalaxyl-m and phosphorous acid for control of tuber pink rot and late blight will be assessed. This data will aid in the registration of phosphorous acid for use in potato production in Canada.
