C. A Fascinating Fauna (Continued)

8F. Australia and Tasmania

Map showing biogeographic regions. Origins, faunal exchanges and ancient dispersal routes across oceans are presented. Description of this image follows.

The Australian fauna is almost entirely endemic (native), with the only living species of Tettigarctidae and just a few of the cicadaspecies originating in southeast Asian or New Guinea entering Queensland. One African genus has spread through southern Asia as far as Australia, and one Australian genus is also represented on Madagascar.

Cicada species occurring in more than one region of the world are marked with an asterisk (*).
