Areas of Expertise:

  • Study the role of forage species and their varieties in modern cropping systems. The development of forage legume cultivars optimally suited for traditional cropping applications and the mining of secondary metabolites for the production of novel co-products. Major emphases is on improving perennial stand persistence and the nutraceutical content of red clover by investigating the inheritance of relevant traits and development of efficient breeding methodologies

Current Projects:

  • Develop high yielding, persistent, disease resistant cultivars of red clover that are adapted to a wide range of environments and harvesting systems.
  • Evaluate the geno-pheno recurrent selection methods to improve persistence of red clover.
  • Assess the genetic variation of organic molecules found in traditional (red clover) and non-traditional (fenugreek) which may be useful for pharmaceutical/nutraceutical purposes.
  • Participate in regional forage trials through running trials and coordination as required.
