Market snapshot

  • Brazil had a gross domestic product (GDP) of US$1.8 trillion in 2016, which is expected to grow by 0.5% in 2017.
  • In 2016, population reached 210 million, an increase of almost 34 million since 2000. The median age was 31.7 years in 2016, 6.5 years greater than in 2000. Brazil is the fifth-most populous country in the world.
  • Consumer expenditure per capita amounted to US$5,295 in 2016. In 2017, the indicator will rise by 1.0% in real terms. Food and non-alcoholic drinks will also increase by 4% between 2016 and 2017.
  • In 2016, packaged food foodservice volume increased by a moderate 2%, a continued reflection of the economic crisis in the country. Processed meat and seafood saw the fastest growth, with an increase of 6% in packaged food volume in consumer foodservice.
  • Brazil accounts for more than a third of the entire Latin American consumer market. In the period 2017-2030, total consumer expenditure will grow at an average annual rate of 2.5%. It will increase by a cumulative value of 37.1% during that period. (Euromonitor 2017)
  • Brazil has become an agricultural powerhouse, and was the world’s fourth leading exporter of agri-food and seafood products in 2016. The country is a dominant force in the sugar, coffee, and orange juice markets.
