United Kingdom market summary

In 2019, the UK was the 6th largest importer of agri-food and seafood in the world at Can$88.5 billion and held a trade deficit of Can$45.7 billion in the sector. The top five suppliers to the country were the Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, France, and Spain, representing $43.0 billion or 48.6% of total imports. Canada was the UK's twenty-second largest source of agri-food and seafood products, holding a 0.8% share at a value of Can$729.0 million.

From 2015 to 2019, the UK saw its imports increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.3% with products sourced from Canada trailing this rate with a CAGR of −0.1%. In 2019, Canada saw its highest positive balance of trade since 2015, as the surplus increased to Can$292.1 million.

The top five global imports to the UK from 2015 to 2019, were wine of fresh grapes; bread, wafers, products including and similar to rice paper, pastry, cakes, biscuits and other bakers wares; prepared or preserved meat, offal or blood; cheese and curd; and chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa.

The top Canadian exports to the UK were wheat and meslin; dried leguminous vegetables; maize or corn; crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates; bread, wafers, products including and similar to rice paper, pastry, cakes, biscuits and other bakers wares.

Trade overview

The United Kingdom (UK) had a Can$45.7 billion trade deficit of agri-food and seafood products in 2019, with exports valued at Can$42.8 billion and imports at Can$88.5 billion. In 2019, the nation's top agri-food and seafood imports from the world were wine of fresh grapes; bread, wafers, products including and similar to rice paper, pastry, cakes, biscuits and other bakers wares; prepared or preserved meat, offal or blood; cheese and curd; and chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa. The largest five suppliers to the country were the Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, France, and Spain, who accounted for Can$43.0 billion and 48.6% of the market share. The year also saw Canada's trade surplus with the UK reach Can$126.1 billion, the second largest imbalance favouring Canada since 2010. Between 2015 and 2019, exports to the UK grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.3% and saw an overall growth in the market of Can$4.4 billion.

The Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, France, and Spain were the top five exporting nations of agri-foods and seafood into the UK in 2019. The Netherlands has traditionally been the UK's lead trade partner since 2004, with a market share that peaked in 2007 at 15.1% and dipped to its lowest amount in 2019 at 13.4%. Canada's market share traditionally has oscillated between 0.7% and 1.0%, reaching its peak in 2008, and falling to 0.8% in 2019 to become the twenty second largest exporter to the UK

From 2015 to 2019, Poland saw the largest gains in market share with a percent point (PP) gain of 0.8, while Ireland saw the largest PP loss at −0.8%. During this five year span, Poland and Spain had the highest surge in CAGRs of 7.5% and 3.6%, respectively. Reflecting these changes during this time, Poland saw the largest increase in value of exports into the UK by 33.8%, whereas the United States saw the largest drop, falling by 2.1%.

The UK's top five global imports for 2019, were wine of fresh grapes; bread, wafers, products including and similar to rice paper, pastry, cakes, biscuits and other bakers wares; prepared or preserved meat, offal or blood; cheese and curd; and chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa. Within the top 15 imported products, the greatest increase in demand from 2015 to 2019 was for fresh strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, back, white or red currants, gooseberries and other edible fruits at 46.7%. The greatest decrease was for food preparations which fell by −2.8%.

The leading 3 export categories of Canadian agri-food and seafood products to UK were wheat and meslin; dried leguminous vegetables; and maize or corn. These combined commodities accounted for 48.7% of Canada's agri-food and seafood export market share to the UK, a value of Can$355.2 million. In Canada's top fifteen export commodities to the UK, the fastest growing product between 2015 and 2019 were chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa, which grew by 975.1% and had a CAGR of 81.1%. Crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates, prepared or preserved, saw the greatest loss during this period with a −73.0% plunge in demand and a −27.9% CAGR.

Canada was the UK's 33rd largest wine of fresh grapes provider with imports valued at Can$611,712 in 2019. Imports from the world increased at a CAGR of 0.14% between 2015 and 2019.

Canada saw a sharp decline in its CAGR at −33.2%, with a market share that continued to stagnate around 0% from 2015 to 2019.
