Building relationships with Indigenous Peoples
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's (AAFC) outreach efforts with Indigenous Peoples are helping to foster relationships and partnerships with Indigenous communities and organizations. These discussions will assist AAFC in developing agricultural programs and policies that are more inclusive and support the growth of the agriculture sector.
First Nations outreach sessions
AAFC held two separate outreach sessions with First Nations leaders, farmers, land managers and economic development organizations in spring 2017.
The sessions allowed participants to build relationships, learn from the experience of others, and discuss agricultural opportunities for First Nations communities.
Various themes emerged from the outreach sessions including:
- information sharing and communication
- capacity building and skills development
- coordination and collaboration
- commitment and follow-through
- targeted and accessible programs
- access to capital and land
