Overview

Potatoes are the largest vegetable crop in Canada, accounting for 28.0% of all vegetable receiptsFootnote 1 and 15.3% of all horticultural Footnote 2 receipts. Potato receipts totalled $1.28 billion in 2018, up 3.4% from 2017.

In 2018, Canadian growers planted 349,017 acres but only 332,652 acres were harvested due to challenging weather conditions that resulted in delays in harvesting time. Approximately 16,000 acres of total seeded area (or 4.6%) remained unharvested. Prince Edward Island and Manitoba growers left 7.9% (6,800 acres) and 8.3% (5,200 acres) of their seeded area in the ground unharvested, respectively. New Brunswick and Alberta growers lost approximately 1000-1,500 acres and 1,500 acres respectively.

Total production in 2018 was estimated at 4.7 million metric tons of potatoes (or 2.6% less than 2017 production). The main producing provinces were Prince Edward Island (21.9%), Alberta (21.4%), Manitoba (19.6%), New Brunswick (15.2%), Quebec (11.4%) and Ontario (6.7%). Of the total Canadian production, approximately 69% was destined for the processing sector, 19% to the fresh sector and 12% to the seed sector.

Canada has been a world leader in the production of seed potatoes for more than 90 years and is the eighth largest seed potato exporter in the world. About 150 potato varieties are registered in Canada for the production of seed. The varieties grown in each production area are selected to meet the needs of specific markets and local preferences. The principal frying varieties are Russet Burbank, Shepody, Ranger Russet, CalWhite and Umatilla Russet; the main chipping varieties are Superior, Atlantic, Kennebec and Snowden; while the leading table varieties are Superior, Russet Norkotah, Chieftain, Yukon Gold, Norland, Ranger Russet, Goldrush, Sangre and Umatilla Russet.

In the 2018–2019 crop yearFootnote 3, exports of Canadian potatoes and potato products were estimated at $1.88 billion, up 5.2% from the previous crop year and 34.4% over the last five years. Canada exported fresh potatoes (table stock and seed potatoes) worth $295 million and processed potatoes (frozen and other) worth $1.58 billion during that period. By far, the largest export destination for Canadian potatoes and potato products is the United States. Canada’s southern neighbour takes in 86.5% of Canadian potato exports. Philippines (3.1%) and Japan (1.7%) are the second and third largest export destinations, respectively, mostly because of the volume of processed potato products that Canada ships to those two countries.

Canada imported a total value of $450 million in potatoes in 2018–2019. Of that amount, $311 million was for frozen and processed potatoes, and the remaining $139 million was for fresh potatoes ($130 million for table stock potatoes and $9 million for seed potatoes).
