Update on the AgriCompetitiveness Program
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of Canada, as well as many provinces and territories, have established guidance on discretionary travel and public health orders restricting gatherings/events of different purposes and sizes in order to contain COVID-19 spread. These measures remain in effect until further notice.
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) will be considering COVID-19 restrictions during the review of project applications under the AgriCompetitiveness Program.
As you plan your activities for 2021-22 (year 4) and 2022-23 (year 5), AAFC encourages you to:
- propose activities that are not reliant on travel and in person meetings
- plan alternative delivery models in case of continued restrictions or local outbreaks
- consider how your organization can adapt to support your clients in the context of the evolving COVID-19 pandemic

The AgriCompetitiveness Program aims to help the agricultural sector to leverage, coordinate and build on existing capacity, enhance safety, adapt to changing commercial and regulatory environments, seize new opportunities, share best practices, and provide mentorship opportunities.
It will accomplish these goals by supporting industry to build on existing capacity by facilitating the sharing and expansion of skills, knowledge, and best practices, and increase agricultural awareness. It will also provide for activities that allow agri-businesses to transition, adapt, and improve their profitability by nurturing the entrepreneurial capacity of new and established farmers, delivering farm safety initiatives, and cultivating individual and industry leadership.
In addition, the program will support activities undertaken by important domestic agricultural fairs which have strong international and domestic components, as well as generic agriculture awareness activities which will help strengthen public trust about the origin of the food they eat and how it is produced.
If approved, support is available in the form of non-repayable contributions from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC).
Applications were accepted on an ongoing basis from February 13, 2018 to March 31, 2020 for the first three years of the program.
Starting July 1, 2020, a call for proposals process will be undertaken for projects for the 2021-22 (year 4) and 2022-23 (year 5) funding years. Applications will be accepted from July 1, 2020 until November 1, 2020. The Program will prioritize applications received within these dates.
Eligible applications received after November 1, 2020 will only be considered if sufficient funding remains.
The program ends March 31, 2023.
