Abstract

On the identity of Coleophora pyrrhulipennella Zeller, 1839 and description of Coleophora pulchripennella Baldizzone n. sp. (Lepidoptera, Coleophoridae). This work is devoted to the description of Coleophora pulchripennella, n. sp., a species with a predominantly Mediterranean distribution linked to its larval host plant, Erica arborea. It was previously confused with C. pyrrhulipennella Zeller, 1839, whose larvae feed on other species of Erica and on Calluna vulgaris. The two species can be distinguished by their habitus and marked differences in the male and female genitalia. DNA barcodes sequences showed a 1.8% interspecific difference between C. pulchripennella and C. pyrrhulipennella, that correlates well with morphological differences.
