Federal Sustainable Development Strategy

The Government's commitment to sustainable development is reflected in the Federal Sustainable Development Act (the Act), which received Royal Assent on June 26, 2008.

The Act requires the Minister of Environment and Climate Change to table a Federal Sustainable Development Strategy, and a report on the federal government’s progress in implementing the Strategy, every three years.

The Act also requires each Minister presiding over a Federal Sustainable Development Strategy department or agency to prepare a Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy.

2016-2019 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy

The 2016-2019 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy was tabled in Parliament on October 6, 2016. The Strategy responds to public feedback and presents 13 goals that are a Canadian reflection of the environmentally-related sustainable development goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It also includes stronger targets and indicators, new short-term milestones, and clear action plans.

Spring 2017 Update

A Federal Sustainable Development Strategy for Canada Spring 2017 Update (PDF) includes results on short-term milestones and updates to key priorities, including announcements in Budget 2017.

Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy

This Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy has been updated from the 2017-2020 Strategy that was tabled in October 2017 to reflect the Departmental Results Framework and the new agricultural policy framework, the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, that came into effect on April 1, 2018.

On October 6, 2017 Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s 2017-2020 Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy was tabled. It describes the Department's objectives, the vision and the decision-making process for sustainable development. In addition, it sets out its contribution to the goals and targets of the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy, as well as the application of Strategic Environmental Assessments.
