Research projects (Kentville Research and Development Centre)
The Kentville Research and Development Centre (Kentville RDC) supports innovation research, development and technology transfer activities relevant to five of the nine Agriculture and Agri-Food Sector Science Strategies.
Kentville RDC develops new cultivated varieties of small fruits (for example: strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries) and studies crop physiology to optimize primary production techniques, increase yields and minimize losses. A multidisciplinary approach is used to study crop disease and pests in a period of changing climate and intensive production, and to reduce chemical inputs.
Research is conducted to:
- develop opportunities related to health-promoting phytochemicals in blueberries
- mitigate microbiological contamination (Listeria, Salmonella, E. coli) of fresh and minimally-processed horticultural products
- investigate natural antimicrobials of bacterial and plant origin against spoilage and pathogenic organisms
- develop postharvest technologies to maintain fruit quality (primarily apple and grape) and, to a limited extent, fresh and minimally processed vegetable products, during extended commercial storage
Agro-ecosystem productivity and health
Research focuses on identifying, monitoring, and integrating crop management strategies to optimize agricultural inputs, enhance crop productivity, improve soil/water quality, manage nutrients in wetlands, and reduce impacts from known pests. Kentville RDC leads on climate adaptation research for the maritime region.
Forages and beef
Scientists are developing forage germplasm and forage management strategies to overcome poor persistence of forage legume species and enhance the ability of grass and legume species to adapt to climate change. Additionally, scientists are examining the effect of feeding these forages as well as alternative beef finishing systems on livestock weight gain and quality.
Biodiversity and bioresources
Research is carried out to enhance the productivity, quality and resiliency of berry crops and tree fruits through research in support of genetic improvement and sources of genetic variability. Activities also focus on enhancing the landscape impact on pollinators’ capacity/populations to support the productive capacity of the agricultural sector (with proof of concept with wild blueberry).
