About the Glomeromycetes in vitro Collection

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's (AAFC) Glomeromycetes in vitro collection (GINCO) traces its origin to the close international scientific collaboration between the Ottawa Research and Development Centre, the Canadian Collection of Fungal Cultures (CCFC, Canada) and the Mycothèque de l'Université catholique de Louvain (MUCL, Belgium). It is the brainchild of Dr. Yolande Dalpé (Ottawa Research and Development Centre) and Dr. Stéphane Declerck (MUCL, Belgium). The collection is now managed by Dr. Franck Stefani (Ottawa Research and Development Centre) and supported by research teams having a huge know-how in isolation, cultivation, propagation and conservation of in vitro monoxenically produced arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi.

Purpose of the collection

The objective of AAFC's GINCO is to provide the scientific community and industry with a source of high quality starting inoculum of AM fungi, free of contaminants as produced under in vitro conditions.

This service to the community is considered essential for the ongoing investigations required in both fundamental and applied research into the domain of mycorrhizal symbioses that aim to accelerate the development of new and original bioproducts and biotechnologies capable of sustaining, in the long-term, the quality and the yields of Canadian agriculture.

The activities performed to reach this principal objective include:

  • studying the AM fungi biodiversity of indigenous and agricultural soil;
  • isolating, propagating and selecting strains among the highest performers in establishing mycorrhizal symbiosis;
  • insuring the availability of a growing diversity of AM fungal strains for clients;
  • performing continuous quality control of AM fungi cultures maintained in the collection;
  • insuring secure and rapid distribution of AM fungi inoculum;
  • maintaining twin reference collections under in vivo conditions.
