Check out Yogurt!

Yogurt and science go together like, well, yogurt and fruit. At Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, scientists are helping dairy farmers keep cows healthy and producing products that are safe and nutritious. They also study the potential for probiotics, carefully managed bacteria, to boost the health benefits of yogurt even more.

[Fun, energetic background music.]

[Blue background. A small brightly coloured container of yogurt (with Yogurt printed on the front) falls from above to land on centre screen.]

Text on screen: Yogurt

Male narrator:
A container of yogurt. Another great Canadian favourite. There was a time and it really wasn’t that long ago...

[The container of yogurt is replaced with a bowl of yogurt.]

[Yogurt text is replaced by Not Too Long Ago.]

...perhaps 25 years, when yogurt was consumed only by a very small percentage of Canadians.

[An animation of three people appears to the right of the bowl of yogurt.]

Text on screen: Canadians who eat yogurt

There weren’t very many brands and there wasn’t much variety.

[The animation of three people dissolves and is replaced by a small brightly coloured container of yogurt, bowl of yogurt, yogurt based dessert (including strawberries and blueberries) and the bottom half of a milk bottle.]

Today, yogurt is a popular dessert alternative and a significant diet and health food. Our scientists are studying whether the addition of probiotic cultures can boost its health benefits even more by lowering cholesterol...

...strengthening the immune system...

...or helping people who are lactose intolerant.

[The small brightly coloured container of yogurt, bowl of yogurt, yogurt based dessert and the bottom half of a milk bottle dissolves and is replaced by a small brightly coloured container of yogurt, the equal sign, an animation of a bacterium (with a happy face), the plus sign, and a full milk bottle.]

Yogurt is a brilliant blend of milk products and carefully managed bacteria like this little guy, L. casei.

With or without the addition of fruit...

[L. casei text disappears. A strawberry pops up below the L. casei animation.]

...and other flavours, yogurt is a very healthy...

[The brightly coloured container of yogurt, the equal sign, an animation of a bacterium (with a happy face), the plus sign, and a full milk bottle disappears and is replaced with a brightly coloured container of yogurt. A heart appears above the container.]

...very nutritious food.

[There is a close up of the brightly coloured container of yogurt and the heart. The container and heart then disappear and are replaced by a stylized red barn with a conveyor belt going through the barn doors. We can see a fruit orchard on the left, dairy cows on the right and a bottle of milk on the conveyor belt.]

Our scientists at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada focus on...

[Microscope lenses fall from above stopping just above the milk bottle.]

...milk and milk products, helping our dairy farmers provide the key ingredients...

[A bowl of blueberries appears on the conveyor belt.]

...that make up this terrific food product. We make sure that the dairy products are safe...

[A basket of strawberries appears on the conveyor belt.]

[Every few seconds the conveyor belt moves towards the barn, allowing more milk bottles to pop up at the beginning of the conveyor belt.]

...and that the cows that produce those products are healthy...

Text on screen: Healthy (next to the cows)

...and free of disease.

Text on screen: Free of Diseases (under the text healthy, next to the cows)

[The conveyor belt scene dissolves and is replaced by a lab scene including microscope lenses, test tubes and animation of bacteria (with happy faces).]

We also work in the lab studying the potential of probiotics...

Text on screen: probiotics (next to one of the bacteria)

...to enhance the health benefits of the food we eat.

[The text probiotics disappears.]

And that has the potential to have a positive impact in Canada and around the world.

[The lab scene dissolves and is replaced by a brightly coloured container with a spoon (blue background).]

In the meantime, enjoy that yogurt...

[Sound of a chime off screen.]

...because it’s a food with a very interesting future. Explore something else.

[Fun, energetic background music fades out.]
