It’s one of the most succulent, nutritious and plentiful crops in Canada.

Canadian farms produce close to a million metric tonnes of tomatoes every year, but who’s making sure tomatoes are as hearty, tasty and as healthy as they can be?

We are.

At Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada we’ve been studying them for over a century. Our researchers and scientists apply their passion for tomatoes to finding better ways to grow them using hydroponics in greenhouses and using drip irrigation in field production.

At some of our research centres we focus on pest management, soil, water, air quality, nutrient management and crop productivity.

We study diseases and enemies and find sustainable ways to fight them. We’re also interested in the colour red.

Tomatoes are full of lycopene and our scientists are looking into whether it protects against cancer and other diseases and we’re developing practical applications that will lead to new opportunities for our tomato producers. How do we keep learning?
