Competitive trade analysis – beef in the EU

February 2018

Report content summary

According to the Strategic Market Assessment of the European Union (EU) report, beef and beef products have been identified as a promising market opportunity in the EU, once certain market access issues are resolved. This report highlights beef imports into the EU and identifies the best opportunities for Canadian exports.

Specifically, the data analysis that follows focuses on the EU’s top ten fresh, frozen, and processed beef imports from non-EU suppliers. It identifies the gap between EU imports from non-EU suppliers and the proportion provided by Canada, and then outlines top international competitors.

Unless otherwise specified, all figures in this document are based on import data as reported EU member customs, and were sourced from Global Trade Tracker (2017).

EU’s market summary

The EU imported C$8.3 million worth of beef and products from Canada in 2016, which made the EU the eighth export market for Canada’s beef and beef products.

Beef and beef product demand is increasing in the EU which is by far the largest beef market in the world ($18.6B) at more than double the size of the US which is second at $7.5B. Even if you remove all intra-EU trade, the EU is still the fifth largest market in the world with $3.2B from non-EU suppliers.

The EU’s top beef and beef product non-EU suppliers in 2016 were Brazil with 31% market share, Argentina (20%), Uruguay (15%) and the US (10.5%).
