Potato Market Information Review 2016-2017

Alternative formats

Overview

Potatoes are the largest vegetable crop in Canada, accounting for 27.3% of all vegetable receiptsFootnote 1 and 16.6% of all horticulturalFootnote 2 receipts. Potato receipts totalled $1.19 billion in 2017, down 4.9% from 2016.

In 2017, Canada set a new yield record for the tenth consecutive year. Potato farmers planted 347,416 acres (139,947 hectares) of potatoes in 2017, down 0.3% from 2016. Seeded area was up in New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario, relatively stable in Alberta and down every other province. Prince Edward Island accounted for 24.3% of the total potato planted area in 2017, followed by Manitoba (18.2%) and Alberta (15.5%).

Production reached 4,822,186 tonnes in 2017, up 0.6% from 2016. The main producing provinces were Prince Edward Island (22.3%), Manitoba (20.9%), Alberta (19.3%), New Brunswick (14.3%), Quebec (12.2%) and Ontario (7.4%). Of the total Canadian production, approximately 65% was destined for the processing sector, 21% to the fresh sector and 14% to the seed sector.

Canada has been a world leader in the production of seed potatoes for more than 90 years and is the fifth largest seed potato exporter in the world. About 150 potato varieties are registered in Canada for the production of seed. The varieties grown in each production area are selected to meet the needs of specific markets and local preferences. Russet Burbank, Shepody, Ranger Russet, CalWhite and Umatilla Russet are the main frying varieties; Superior, Atlantic, Kennebec and Snowden are the main chipping varieties; and Superior, Russet Norkotah, Chieftain, Yukon Gold, Norland, Ranger Russet, Goldrush, Sangre and Umatilla Russet are the leading table varieties.

In the 2016–2017 crop yearFootnote 3, exports of Canadian potatoes and potato products were estimated at $1.72 billion, up 7.6% from the previous crop year and 49.5% over the last five years. Canada exported fresh potatoes (table stock and seed potatoes) worth $315 million and processed potatoes (frozen and other) worth $1.40 billion during that period. By far, the largest export destination for Canadian potatoes and potato products is the United States. Canada’s neighbour to the south takes in 87.3% of Canadian potato exports. Philippines (1.57%) and Mexico (1.56%) are the second and third largest export destinations, respectively, mostly because of the volume of processed potato products that Canada ships to those two countries.

Canada imported a total value of $413 million in potatoes in 2016–2017. Of that amount, $290 million was for frozen and processed potatoes, and the remaining $123 million was for fresh potatoes ($119 million for table stock potatoes and $4 million for seed potatoes).
