Pesticide Risk Reduction Program

The Pesticide Risk Reduction Program (PRRP) – a joint initiative of Agriculture and Agri-food Canada's (AAFC) Pest Management Centre (PMC) and Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) – works to reduce the risks to human health and the environment from pesticides used in the agriculture and agri-food industry.

The Program creates a framework through which stakeholders, including growers, grower organizations, pest management experts and others, develop and implement Pesticide Risk Reduction Strategies. Strategies aim to provide reduced-risk tools to growers, including Biopesticides, and to encourage the adoption of alternative pest management approaches, practices and technologies.

The PRRP provides funding and regulatory support for Implementation Projects identified through strategy work and other consultations. Success of the projects is tracked and the current pest management situation for individual crops is updated in the respective Crop Profiles.

Objectives

The PMC is committed to improving the access of growers to low-risk, environmentally and economically sustainable pest control tools and practices. Within this mandate, the objective of the PRRP is to reduce the risks to the environment and to human health posed by the use of pesticides in agriculture.

To achieve this objective, the PRRP works with grower groups, industry, provinces, and researchers to identify gaps in pest management and opportunities for pesticide risk reduction, and to develop and implement strategies to address these gaps.

Program Delivery

The PRRP supports Canadian growers by facilitating the development, availability and adoption of reduced risk pest management strategies, including biological controls and integrated approaches for both major and minor crops.

In order to improve access to, and promote adoption of reduced risk tools and practices by Canadian growers, the PRRP:

  • Coordinates strategy discussions and brings together key players to identify pest management issues and solutions
  • Supports research, data generation and demonstration projects
  • Encourages development and adoption of reduced risk alternatives
  • Provides regulatory assistance to industry collaborators
  • Develops and disseminates information on reduced risk pest management options
